The project invests taxpayer funds in improving water quality in the Saw Mill River, which is integral to the environmental health of the region. A valuable wildlife habitat with a swamp forest providing biodiversity and recreation, the River is threatened by pollution. Improving its water quality will directly benefit the adjacent City of Yonkers, which since 2011 has daylighted four sections of the Saw Mill River. As the Saw Mill River empties into the Hudson River, the benefits of improved water quality to support wildlife, natural habitats and humans, extend to all. Reducing flooding, the project will protect public and private property, controlling the financial cost to the nation of flood-related destruction, which is borne in part through FEMA Public Assistance. It is also critical to the villages along the Saw Mill and Hudson Rivers, and other tidal waterbodies, where frequent and severe storms threaten safety and economic stability.
Federal nexus: This project qualifies as Storm Water Management under the Clean Water Act, 33 U.S.C. 1383(c) (Section 603(c) of the Clean Water Act).
