April Marks Eighth Annual Medicaid Awareness Month

WHITE PLAINS, NY – Today Congressman George Latimer (NY-16), White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, White Plains Common Council President Victoria Presser and Westchester County Legislator Ben Boykin were joined by Protect Our Care New York to highlight how Medicaid is under attack. President Trump and Congressional Republicans are working to cut Medicaid by nearly a trillion dollars to pay for tax-breaks for billionaires. Medicaid plays a vital role in providing affordable health care coverage for 196,000 people in Westchester and the Bronx, including 27,000 seniors.

“Medicaid isn’t just a budget line, it’s a lifeline for millions of New Yorkers,” said Congressman George Latimer. “In the 16th District alone, tens of thousands of seniors depend on Medicaid to stay healthy and secure. We cannot, and will not, allow Republicans to balance the budget on the backs of those who can least afford it.”

During the event, held during the eighth annual Medicaid Awareness Month, speakers discussed what’s at stake for this vital program and for the seniors who rely on Medicaid for health care. Medicaid benefits just about every household and community in the country.

“For so many seniors in our community, Medicaid plays a vital role in accessing the care they need to live with dignity and security,” said White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach. “Cuts to this essential program would be devastating, not just for individuals, but for families and caregivers who rely on our safety net. We must protect Medicaid and the seniors who have contributed so much to our community.”

“Medicaid benefits so many of our White Plains and Westchester County neighbors,” said White Plains Common Council President Victoria Presser. “When we talk about cutting Medicaid, we’re talking about stripping away the most basic protections from our family members who need them most. I’m proud to stand with leaders across our community to defend this lifeline for seniors.”

“These proposed Medicaid cuts are not just bad policy — they are a direct threat to the health and wellbeing of Westchester families,” said Westchester County Legislator Ben Boykin. Every dollar taken from Medicaid is a dollar taken from a senior’s cancer treatment or doctor visit. We must fight back against these cruel and short-sighted attacks.”
